Ivan was born in Romford in 1943 but grew up in the West Country on a smallholding at the foot of Glastonbury Tor. His parents left London during the war to pursue their business manufacturing leather goods and to start a family away from the nightly bombing raids. Ivan contracted polio in his early teens, no doubt stimulating his interest in healthcare.
