Robin Winney was born and educated in Dunfermline, Fife, and qualified in medicine from Edinburgh in 1968. After house officer jobs, including in cardiac surgery, he joined the new medical renal unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, led by James Robson and Anne Lambie. Robin completed general medical and specialist nephrology training and was appointed the first NHS consultant in the unit in 1978. He remained there until his retirement in 2005.
