In 2013 the Gates Foundation granted awards of US$100 000 each, to 11 researchers, to fund projects aiming to invent ‘the next generation of condoms’.1 The funding was targeted towards addressing one of the key aspirations of the Gates Foundation global health programme, which is to ensure that ‘the next generation grows up in a world without deadly infectious diseases’.2
