Diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent in patients with coronary atherosclerosis. As a result of several factors, including a pro-inflammatory state, dyslipidaemia, hyperglycaemia and insulin resistance, coronary artery disease in patients with diabetes is characterised by diffusely diseased vessels with smaller lumen diameters and more calcified plaques.1 Consequently, it is well known that patients with diabetes who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are at a higher risk of adverse clinical events, such as myocardial infarction, repeat revascularisation, stent thrombosis and death. Recent studies showed that this increased risk of adverse events is not only seen in patients with known diabetes, but also in patients with unknown (silent) diabetes and those with pre-diabetes.2
