Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a major cause of death in the UK. In January 2024, the Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Outcomes Registry (OHCAO) published data from all of the English regional ambulance services, reporting that of the nearly 35 000 people treated by the National Health Service ambulance services, who suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in 2022, just 7.8% survived to 30 days.1 This compares unfavourably with other countries, notably Norway, where survival rates of 25% are reported.1 Every week in the UK, around eight young people (aged <35 years old) die following an SCA due to undiagnosed cardiac conditions comprising heart muscle, electrical and structural diseases.2
