Gail (née Crabbie) was born in Edinburgh and educated at Priors Field School in Surrey. She went on to study A levels at Charterhouse where she was one of the first girls. She gained a degree in biochemistry at Bristol University in 1970, followed by a doctorate in biochemistry and x ray crystallography in 1976.
