Edward Tierney qualified in 1964 and undertook house officer posts in Ireland, including at County Hospital Monaghan, followed by training in obstetrics and gynaecology and anaesthetics. He was held in high regard by his seniors. A reference described him as “a dedicated doctor, an excellent and pleasant colleague . . . whom I can recommend without reserve whatsoever,” adding that he was the best house physician the author had encountered in 20 years.
