The recently published REVEAL guidance in The BMJ offers a timely framework for identifying existing evidence before starting new clinical trials.1 Its central message is important: no new study should proceed without systematic consideration of existing knowledge. But if this initiative is to change research practice meaningfully, identifying previous evidence must develop into a broader culture of evidence responsibility.
