Muscular strength in older women predicts survival. In a longitudinal study of 5000 women aged 63 to 99 years, higher grip strength and better chair stand performance were associated with lower all cause mortality over eight years of follow-up ( JAMA Netw Open doi:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2025.59367). Women in the top quarter of the strength distribution had a 30% lower mortality risk than those in the bottom quarter, even after adjustment for accelerometer measured physical activity and sedentary time, as well as walking speed and C reactive protein.
