Protecting player welfare is of paramount importance in sport. As a result, sports governing bodies need to ensure that concussions, which are a traumatic brain injury,1 are managed as effectively as possible. A player who is suspected to have sustained a concussion should be removed from the field of play at the earliest opportunity. However, the Laws of the Game (of football) do not currently provide for temporary concussion substitutes (TCSs), which would enable clinicians to carry out an assessment in a controlled off-field environment for up to 15 min before making a determination if a concussion is present. Instead, assessments take place on-field and on the sideline, typically taking three to five minutes.
