Approximately one in five adults (12.7 million) in the UK have chronic respiratory illnesses, 1 including interstitial lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis (PF).2 PF impairs gas exchange in the lung by reducing the rate of diffusion of gas across the blood-gas barrier, resulting in ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) mismatch.3 4 This causes exertional desaturation, thus limiting daily activities, increased breathlessness and impaired quality of life.5 6
