Neville was born in Leeds in 1930 and educated at Roundhay School, gaining a scholarship at 16 to read medicine at Balliol College, Oxford. After graduating in 1953, he spent two enjoyable years in general medicine in Bangor and Llandudno before beginning his national service in the Royal Navy. As a medical officer, Neville’s main responsibilities were air sea rescue, testing new safety equipment, and evaluating air crew. After deciding that he wanted to specialise in psychiatry, he took a position in Manchester on completing his service.
