Asthma is one of the commonest long term diseases, affecting around 8% of the population in the UK, Europe, and North America.12 However, about one third of people categorised as having the disease are misdiagnosed,3 largely because objective testing is poorly utilised, and diagnostic tests may not be available in primary care where asthma is most commonly diagnosed.
