Navigating the long-term effects of pre-eclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation and prematurity: a mother and daughter’s experience

As the incidence of and survival from preterm birth continues to rise, there are increasing numbers of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) survivors entering adult life. Neonatologists typically follow their patients up until the age of 1 or 2 years, at which point, if there are ongoing health issues, they are passed on to a general or community paediatrician, or an appropriate subspecialist. However, no long-term follow-up is routinely offered to survivors of NICU in the UK; either to monitor sequelae, or to provide support.
