I became the joint editor-in-chief of ADC in May 1994 when Bernard Valman, paediatrician at Northwick Park, retired from the post.1 I was surprised; even though I had been an associate editor since 1990, my contributions had been slight, namely, reviewing a couple of books and a few general paediatric submissions and occasionally attending the ‘hanging committee’, where final decisions were made on what to publish.
