E-307 A bibliometric analysis of the top 50 most influential articles on venous sinus stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension treatment

Introduction Venous sinus stenting (VSS), an endovascular intervention targeting venous outflow obstruction, has been increasingly described across the neurosurgical and neurointerventional literature over the past two decades as a treatment option for idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Despite its growing clinical relevance, particularly in the management of refractory symptoms, visual compromise, and elevated intracranial pressure, the scholarly impact and evolution of research in this field have not been systematically examined. This bibliometric analysis identifies and characterizes the most influential publications on VSS for the treatment of IIH.Methods In the execution of this bibliometric-based review article, the Web of Science database was used to perform a title-specific, keyword-based search for all publications until November 2025. The keywords (‘venous sinus stent’ OR ‘venous-sinus stent’ OR ‘transverse sinus stent’ OR ‘sigmoid sinus stent’ OR ‘dural venous sinus stent’ OR ‘cerebral venous sinus stent’ OR ((‘stent’ OR ‘stenting’ OR ‘stent placement’ OR ‘endovascular stent’)) AND (‘venous sinus’ OR ‘transverse sinus’ OR ‘sigmoid sinus’)) AND (‘idiopathic intracranial hypertension’ OR ‘IIH’ OR ‘pseudotumor cerebri’ OR ‘benign intracranial hypertension’) were used. Our results were arranged in descending order based on the article’s citation count. The 50 most-cited articles were selected for analysis. Parameters for analysis included the following: title, citation count, citations per year, authors, specialty of first author, institution, country of origin, publishing journal, Source Normalized Impact per Paper, Impact per publication, and impact factor.Results The keyword-based search showed that 356 articles were published between 1997 and 2025 on VSS for IIH, with the top 50 most cited were published between 2002 and 2022. These top 50 articles collected a total of 5204 citations with an average of 104.08 citations per paper. The rate of self-citations accounted for an average of 6.4% of the total number of citations.Conclusions The bibliometric analysis provides a quantitative overview of how medical topics and interventions are analyzed in academic medicine.
