Background This study aimed to examine the association between internet-based health care communication use and all-cause mortality among colorectal cancer survivors.Methods Data were drawn from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2011–2018 and the linked mortality files, with mortality follow-up through December 31, 2019. Colorectal cancer survivors were identified based on self-reported diagnoses. Internet-based health care communication use was defined as a positive response to any of three questions regarding use of the internet to: (1) fill a prescription, (2) schedule an appointment with a health care provider, or (3) communicate with a health care provider by email. Each type of use was also examined separately. Cox proportional hazards models incorporating survey sample weights were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality, adjusting for potential confounders.Results A total of 1,623 colorectal cancer survivors were included, representing an estimated 1,272,081 survivors in the U.S. population after weighting. During a median follow-up of 49 months, 24.89% of participants died. Compared with survivors who did not use internet-based health care communication, those who used such services had a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.24–0.66). In subtype analyses, internet use to fill prescriptions (HR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.23–0.92), schedule medical appointments (HR = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.05–0.44), and communicate with health care providers by email (HR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.18–0.63) were each independently associated with lower all-cause mortality in colorectal cancer survivors.Conclusions Internet-based health care communication use was associated with significantly reduced all-cause mortality among colorectal cancer survivors, suggesting a potential role of digital health engagement in improving long-term survival in this population.
