Building a gastroenterology fellowship programme in Rwanda: a model of international partnerships and sustainable capacity building

Gastrointestinal (GI) and liver diseases are a growing public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Rwanda.1 2 Digestive diseases have received limited attention and funding despite their significant contribution to morbidity and mortality. However, recent trends reveal a rising burden. Between 1990 and 2019, the prevalence of digestive diseases in SSA nearly doubled, increasing by 95.7% in males and 103.5% in females,3 highlighting the urgency for targeted interventions and specialist training.
