Healthy adult lowlanders sojourning above altitudes of 3000 m naturally develop periodic breathing (PB) ~40% of total sleep time (TST) increasing to 100% TST at 8000 m.1 Concerns have been raised that the PB at altitude may be pathological due to sympathicovagal imbalance and the development of a pro-inflammatory maladaptive state.
