Traumatic aniridia 11 years post uneventful cataract surgery

Traumatic aniridia is a rare but serious complication of trauma. This case report presents a woman in her 70s who developed traumatic aniridia 11 years after an uneventful cataract surgery, following blunt trauma to the forehead. The case underscores that cataract surgery incisions, even many years postoperatively, can reopen after trauma, allowing a passage of the iris to prolapse—leading to aniridia. The case is further unique in which it highlights how an intact Soemmering ring in traumatic aniridia can reduce glare. This case report is the longest interval reported in the literature between cataract surgery and traumatic aniridia in the United Kingdom.
