Medicine is an innately temporal exercise. Illness and injury shorten a person’s time or worsen it, and the role of medicine is to resist and counter threats to the quality and quantity of our time. By some measures, it is extraordinarily successful in this aim. Life expectancy has doubled in the last two centuries, largely due to medical advances and improved access to healthcare and the determinants of health (eg, nutrition, sanitation, housing and education).
