When Charles Easmon decided to pursue a career in medical microbiology in the 1970s, many of his contemporaries were baffled. At the time it was widely believed that the use of antibiotics and vaccines had removed most of the dangers posed by infection and that medical microbiology was not a suitable field for an ambitious young physician.
