Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic active against many aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including intracellular pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis. Oral solid, oral liquid and intravenous azithromycin formulations have been authorised for decades in the European Union (EU) in a wide range of infections commonly seen in the community, such as infections of the respiratory tract, the skin, the urogenital tract, and others.
