The global burden of stroke in the young continues to grow, with rising incidence and prevalence placing increasing strain on healthcare systems. While stroke is typically associated with older adults, young stroke survivors—often amid career development, family life and other key life transitions—face a distinct set of challenges. The societal costs are also substantial, given the long-term loss of productivity and increased care needs. Traditionally, post-stroke outcomes have been evaluated using simple functional scales such as the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), which primarily captures motor disability. However, as early recognition and acute treatments improve, many, and especially younger, survivors are left with subtle yet disabling non-motor symptoms.1 Despite their impact on recovery and quality of life, these outcomes have received limited research attention, and most existing studies focus narrowly on one or two symptom domains. The JNNP study by Mussa et al 2 makes an important contribution, providing a comprehensive assessment of non-motor outcomes in young stroke survivors.
