Throughout pregnancy, the fetal brain undergoes rapid and complex development, maturing into a structure that superficially resembles the adult human brain by term. Studying fetal brain maturation enhances our understanding of how the foundations of the adult brain are laid and provides insight into the developmental origins of neurological disorders that may only become apparent later in life.
