23 Adults with lower-limb apophysitis in adolescence have more hypertension, higher bodymass, and low physical activity levels: 1977–2020 cohort-study from secondary-care

Background Lower-limb apophysitis (LLA) affects >10% of children (8–17y). Recent data shows LLA might have lasting consequences into middle age, yet research has focused on musculoskeletal issues. This study aimed to report prevalence of overweight, obesity, self-reported non-infectious diseases, and adherence to WHO physical activity (WHO-PA) recommendations in adults with a history of adolescent LLA, compared with general population estimates.Materials and Methods From the Danish Patient Registry, adults diagnosed with LLA between 1977–2020 were invited to complete a survey on diseases, body composition, and physical activity. General population data originated from the National Health Profile 2017. Proportions were compared using Chi-Square tests.Results The survey was completed by 762 participants:18–24y (n=346); 25–34y (n=125); 35–44y (n=81); 45–55y (n=210). Overweight prevalence was 22%, 33%, 48%, and 37%, respectively. Obesity prevalence was 8%, 16%, 16%, and 33%. High blood pressure (HBP) prevalence was 1%, 2%, 7%, and 24%. WHO-PA were met by 61%, 45%, 53%, and 47%. Cancer, diabetes mellitus, angina, COPD, stroke, and heart attack were reported by too few participants for reliable estimates. Compared to the general population, some age groups showed higher prevalence of overweight (35–44y, p=0.0132), obesity (45–54y, p<0.0001), and HBP (45–55y, p=0.0019), and lower adhered to the WHO-PA (18–24y, p<0.0001; 25–34y, p<0.0001; 35–44y, p=0.0031; 45–55y, p<0.0001).Conclusion There is a high prevalence of overweight, obesity, hypertension and not adhering to WHO-PA among adults with a history of adolescent LLA. These findings suggest potential association of adolescent LLA with long-term adverse general and cardiovascular health.
