Anne grew up in north west London, excelling in science and maths at Henrietta Barnett girls grammar school, and then studying medicine at the London Hospital. There she met fellow student Hugh. They qualified together in 1970 and married soon after. Following pre-registrar jobs at the London, Anne and Hugh spent a year volunteering as junior doctors in Quetta, Pakistan, under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society. There they made lifelong friends and returned to the UK with a heightened appreciation of the NHS and a strong commitment to working in the service for the rest of their careers.
