We read with interest the study by Mantovani et al, which, through a large-scale meta-analysis, revealed that hypothyroidism is associated with an elevated risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).1 However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Recent large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified novel risk variants associated with hypothyroidism and MASLD.2 3 With their higher statistical power, these large-scale studies offer an important opportunity to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the association between hypothyroidism and MASLD.
