Roland was born in Leicester. His father, Robert, was a university lecturer in Spanish (author of Living Spanish, which remains a standard textbook) and his Swiss mother, Gertrude Lehner, taught French and German at Leicester Adult Education Institute. His brother, Antony, was associate professor of Byzantine literature in London, Ontario, and is now retired.
