Born in Munich in the post-war years, Michael initially studied nursing, moving on to medicine and becoming part of a political youth movement confronting the legacy of Nazism. Alienated by an oppressive culture in Germany and attracted by the NHS and new developments in community psychiatry, he moved to London in 1978.
