The definition of neurointerventional surgery was, at one point, straightforward: the application of interventional techniques (catheterization, puncture, etc) for the treatment of neurovascular diseases. The main categories of disease were ischemic (stroke) and hemorrhagic (aneurysm, vascular malformation). The outcomes were primarily anatomic, such as resolution of an occluded vessel, or obliteration of an abnormal vascular pathology.
