Welcome to the August issue of the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health. Across much of the world, we see growing levels of polarisation, driven in part by increasingly separate social experiences and a lack of shared understanding and knowledge about major societal issues. In the UK and much of continental Europe, public concerns over immigration, often presented as a concern over ‘illegal migrants’, have resulted in combative protests and are emblematic of increasing social polarisation. In the USA, division over if and how to reduce immigration is particularly evident, with particular concerns over the actions pursued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
