Emerging problem of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs): what can we learn from EoE and what exists beyond?

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) represent a group of chronic immune-mediated inflammatory conditions that lead to the infiltration of eosinophils along the lining of the gastrointestinal tract with resultant symptoms of organ dysfunction. Whilst eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is the most commonly diagnosed EGID, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the diagnosis and management of non-EoE EGIDs. With an increased incidence of immune-mediated disorders and better understanding of the disease processes, gastroenterologists are now at the forefront of diagnosing and managing this emerging group of disorders. Here, we review the typical presentation symptoms and endoscopic criteria for histological diagnosis and summarise the most up-to-date evidence-based management approaches.
