Why did you do this work? After an initial audit it was found that staff didn’t feel that they were supported after traumatic or sad events leading to feeling left, unguided or forgotten.What did you do? Collaboratively, the emergency matron, paediatric mental health nurse specialist and advanced paediatric nurse practitioner gathered a team on nurses, resident doctors and consultants to create an aftercare team. They would be the team that responds to incidents from resuscitations, to mental health escalations or safe guarding cases. The aim was to introduce a standard procedure for Hot debrief as well as a routine cold debrief follow up. The aim would be to have a cold debrief within 2 weeks of an incident to check on staffs well being, understanding and improvements needed from an event.What did you find? A great start to improving aftercare support with staff showing a 20-30% increase in positive behaviours (as seen in table 1) after a traumatic or worrying event as well as highlighting areas of improvement in relation to clinical scenarios.What does it mean?
