Healthcare institutions globally are involved in three major tasks. These are (1) treating patients, (2) training the next generation of healthcare personnel and (3) doing research that would mitigate the suffering of their patients. This is true of Indian healthcare institutions too. However, with fewer healthcare institutions and personnel than required for our large population, most institutions spend most of their time and energy on treating patients. Teaching and training, as well as research, generally, receive a lower priority.
