Elizabeth was born in Melbourne and attended the Presbyterian Ladies’ College, followed by the University of Melbourne. After qualification she worked in Australia for several years, including as senior teaching fellow in microbiology at Monash University. She subsequently accepted a postdoctoral research fellowship at Hammersmith Hospital, London. This was followed by an appointment as senior lecturer (later reader) in medical microbiology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital/Barts Health NHS Trust, where she was based for many years.
