Steve was born in Chiswick, west London, and studied medicine at University College Hospital Medical School, graduating in 1971. His early career was characteristically eclectic: he worked as a ship’s doctor, spent time in general practice and in clinics in Australia, and gained experience in occupational medicine. This breadth of exposure enriched his understanding of patients and informed the firmly grounded clinical judgment for which he became known.
