Geraint was born in the Welsh village of Cwmgors and attended Pontardawe Grammar School. In 1962 he joined St Thomas’ Medical School in London. He was a keen Welsh speaker and retained the language, living with his uncle Dai and aunt Catherine in Clapham. He achieved a degree in physiology and qualified in medicine with distinction in therapeutics. While doing a house job at St Thomas’ a young nurse, Mary Margaret, assisted him with a lumbar puncture—four years later she became his wife. Geraint did senior house officer jobs at St Thomas’ and Hammersmith hospitals. Registrar jobs were at Addenbrooke’s and in endocrinology in St Thomas’.
