Starting in late 2021, cases of paediatric acute hepatitis of unknown origin (AHUO) surged in frequency, coinciding with a reduction in pandemic lockdown measures. Patients tested negative for hepatotropic viruses A-E and lacked other common causes of acute hepatitis.1 The highest incidence was reported in the UK, Europe and the USA, particularly among children under the age of 6 years.1 A subset of patients developed acute liver failure, with around 6% of children requiring transplantation.2
