Muscle injuries are among the most common injuries in sport.1 Despite their high prevalence, muscle injuries remain complex in their aetiology, arising from multiple interacting external and internal factors. As injury causation has not yet been fully understood, improving our understanding of the qualitative situational characteristics (eg, contact mechanisms, injury-related activities or joint movements) and quantitative situational characteristics (eg, joint angles at the injury frame or timing of the injury during match play) at or around the time of injury2 is a key prerequisite for developing effective injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies.3
