Amid a global cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden of approximately 17.9 million annual deaths (including 7.4 million from stroke and 6.7 million from coronary heart disease),1 rapid advances in mobile connectivity have opened a critical moment for cardiovascular care in Africa. Mobile networks now reach most of the continent, and two-thirds of Africans own a handset.2 Such connectivity offers a new pathway for prevention, diagnosis and follow-up, shifting focus from whether patients can reach a clinic to how effectively evidence-based care can reach the patient.
