Dr MK Mani ( figure 1): My father was an Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer of the Tamil Nadu Government Service. He worked in Delhi on deputation to the Government of India from 1939 to 1946. After we returned to Madras, he served with distinction in various departments of the Government. His greatest achievement was the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. An artesian aquifer under high pressure lay beneath the seam of lignite and mining presented great technical problems which were successfully overcome, so that today the corporation is a great asset to the economy of Tamil Nadu.
