Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) nurses provide essential care and support to patients facing complex conditions. Despite recognition of the value of clinical nurse specialists and advanced practice roles in the care of patients with chronic conditions and cancer, there remains a lack of published data relating to and supporting the contributions of HPB nurses. In response to this evidence gap, a national audit of HPB nursing practice was commissioned by the British Society of Gastroenterology, in partnership with the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the National HPB Nurse Group. For the first time, the HPB nursing workforce of the UK and Ireland has been mapped and the current scope of HPB nursing practice was evaluated, identifying areas of value as well as development opportunities. The audit results provide evidence to inform future professional recognition, development and progression of HPB nursing roles and careers, that will support vital care for patients with HPB diseases.
