Prevention is better than cure, as the saying goes. Some have argued that we should ban the word “prevention” and instead have a wider definition of health, less centred on the absence of sickness (doi:10.1136/bmj.p2212).1 But new BMJ articles this week focus on the value that preventive measures bring—from changing how we cook potatoes to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (doi:10.1136/bmj-2024-082121), to identifying osteoporosis earlier to prevent fractures (doi:10.1136/bmj.r1615).23
