The latest stroke rehabilitation guidelines from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE, www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng236), which replace the 2013 guidelines, come at a time when advances in hyperacute treatments alongside improvements in acute stroke care are leading to increased numbers of stroke survivors in the community. There is also evidence that stroke is not limited to older people, with the incidence of young strokes expected to grow by 123% over the next 20 years.1 We clearly need further recommendations to optimise current rehabilitation frameworks.
