Gale spent his childhood in West Kirby on the Wirral with his parents, brother, and sister. He attended the local Calday Grange Grammar School and graduated in medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1985. Gale’s long and distinguished career started in Leicester with a fellowship in paediatric intensive care and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, followed by a year’s fellowship in Melbourne, where he met his mentor and friend, Frank Shann.
