Despite a wealth of studies demonstrating that a significant minority of parents are affected psychologically by their child’s admission to paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), there is still little evidence-based research on how best to intervene to prevent or reduce their widely documented symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).1 This knowledge gap is important because the emotional depletion of parents carries the risk of negative impacts not only on their own functioning but also on their ability to fully attend to their child’s needs and those of other family members, including siblings, in the aftermath of their child’s critical illness.
