While it is recognised that antidepressants have a role in the management of depression when used appropriately, there has been increasing concern about the potential for adverse effects associated with their longer-term use. 1–3 NHS England has recognised the importance of reducing inappropriate antidepressant prescribing and addressing the withdrawal problems that can be associated with discontinuation of antidepressants.1 3 4
