E-011 The innovation landscape of aneurysm flow diverter surface coatings: a bibliometric patent analysis

Background Flow diverters (FDs) are devices placed inside the parent artery to divert flow away from an aneurysm and reconstruct the parent artery. Despite their ability to occlude the aneurysm, FDs remain thrombogenic. Thus, there has been an increase in the innovation landscape of FD surface coatings. Although popular anti-thrombogenic surface coatings from major device manufacturers are on the market, the FD surface coating landscape has yet to be thoroughly described.Objective We describe current FD surface coating technologies by conducting a bibliometric patent analysis.Methods We systematically reviewed the Lens patent database for all patents related to FD surface coatings.Results We identified 50 patent extended families (EFs) and placed them into 11 categories. 8 EFs utilized an intermediate drug carrying layer; 7 EFs utilized antithrombogenic polymers and small molecules; 7 EFs utilized anticorrosive coatings; 6 EFs utilized coatings to increase tissue compatibility; 3 EFs used heparin moieties/fragments; 3 EFs used peptidomimetics; 3 EFs used coatings that control the drug release rate; 2 EFs utilized nucleic acids; 2 utilized radiopaque/radioprotective coatings, and 10 EFs fell into other categories. Teleflex, Biotronik, Cordis, and Medtronic had the highest number of patents. Patents were filed from 2003 to 2025, with 2009 and 2010 having the highest number of applications.Conclusions These patents contain antithrombogenic technology used in major FD devices like Pipeline Flex-Shield and FRED-X, in addition to more cutting-edge technologies like peptidomimetics.
