Introduction Teaching in the clinical environment requires a specialised skill set, yet many clinical educators receive minimal formal training in teaching. The Doctor to Educator (D2E) course was developed at Great Ormond Street Hospital for children (GOSH), designed to support resident doctors (RD) in improving their clinical teaching skills. The course aims to introduce key pedagogical frameworks and theories to support RD as clinical educators. Methods D2E is a one-day, in-person course which begins with grounding principles in education theory, learning objective and session design, with later sessions focusing on application in the clinical environment e.g. how to teach clinical reasoning. The course employs a blend of lectures, group discussions, and interactive activities, offering practical examples of teaching designs applicable to clinical practice. Results Two courses have been held to date with a total of 24 RD attended. Pre-course evaluations (n=16) revealed that 31% of RD did not agree with holding an awareness of teaching pedagogies or methods used in medical or clinical education. In post-course evaluations (n=20) 91% stated that the course learning objectives were met with 100% stated that they would recommend this course to others. Additionally, a structured debrief session with the course facilitators were organised to allow reflection on the program’s strengths and identify areas for development. This can be demonstrated by positive shift in feedback on the course organisation, speaker knowledge, content and delivery and engagement. Conclusion The D2E course provides a structured, evidence-based medical education framework to enhance clinical teaching skills. By addressing challenges unique to the clinical environment and prioritising practical application, this course equips educators with tools to improve student learning outcomes. The course allows GOSH to be a leader in offering a sustainable faculty development model that could be adapted by other institutions seeking to promote excellence in medical education.
